Impress your other half or indulge with your mates by booking one or all of these gems like we did (as we couldn’t decide, and still can’t!)
1. Pondok Sebatu Villas, Sebatu Village
Set within walking distance of the stunning Gunung Kawi Temple and just 30 minutes from the centre of Ubud, this is the place to be to get away from the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself with the locals (if you can bear to tear yourself away from the resort grounds).
Each villa backs onto an incredible view of the rice terraces and you are surrounded by lush greens making you feel like you’re in the middle of the jungle. We were greeted by a delicious welcome drink and made to feel at home instantly by all of the staff. A Safari style wooden villa with a canopy bed and a typical Balinese style outdoors bathroom was our home for 2 nights, and home to a cute little tropical frog that joined us on the first night!
Our package included a 1-hour full body massage each, which was so needed after a long flight. We’ll spare the details about me mistakenly wearing the white swimsuit you see in the first photograph instead of wearing a bikini (what was I thinking?) so mine really was a full body massage! But, it was the ambiance which really made this place (and the cocktails). If we close our eyes, we can still hear the traditional Balinese music playing during meal times and the big smiles on the staff’s faces each morning.
2. Puri Sebali Resort, Baya, Sebali
If you’re on honeymoon, Puri Sebali Resort ticks all the boxes and more. The private infinity pools are unreal – we ended up spending 2 out of 5 days chilling around the pool and larking around with our inflatable unicorn. Our afternoon ‘cocktail o’clock’ was brought directly to our villa by the super attentive staff and the food was to die for.
One night, we had a candlelit meal on our terrace which was just gorgeous, all decorated with rose petals and a private server all night. (Anyone who knows us will know we were not classy in this moment but we really did try). You can even order private BBQs and other delights to your villa – nothing is too much trouble and there are a whole range of packages available.
Again, these villas are just outside of Ubud so you feel like you’re getting a more authentic experience being out in the open, but whilst still being in close driving distance to Tegalalang, the monkey forest, and all other local attractions.
If you’re looking for a more luxurious retreat, this is where it’s at. We’ve never felt so lucky to stay somewhere and it was almost too good for such folk as us (but we’d be back in a heartbeat if they’d have us!)
3. Ini Vie Villa, Legian, Kuta
These guys know how to do romance! The minute we arrived, we had ‘Happy Honeymoon’ written in flower petals on the bed, and a photograph taken of us with a little sign. There was a water feature on one side of the bed and on the other side, you could roll straight from the bed into the pool.
The swinging chair was my favourite and Phil spent all of the first afternoon in the hammock. We ordered ‘floating wine’ and spent the day moving from the pool to the hot tub to the hammock on repeat. Serious honeymoon goals.
The next morning we had ‘floating breakfast’, which regardless of where you stay in Bali, you have to do this. It might be a bit of a novelty but the food was really good and it was such a treat.
The villas themselves are a little outside of Kuta but the taxis are incredibly cheap if you want to head to Double Six Beach and the central area – just make sure you book with Blue Bird. On our last day, the staff served us a complimentary ‘afternoon tea’ of tortillas and chocolate banana fritters, which if you haven’t tried before, they’re a must!
All in all, the villas successfully made us not want to get on our flight home and we’re currently on a hammock and hot tub mission – watch this space!
